(A secret I didn't want to share because this is a powerful lesson to be learned and thought about.)
Here it is... lol Nowadays EVERYONE has access to any median of art. In some way shape or form. That also means there are a lot A LOT of artists out there. So many people I know draw. So many people do art stuff. So many doing something related. The level of exposure is ridiculous to grow among our fellow peers. It doesn't matter how good one gets. After a time everyone becomes good. and guess what? you are just another artist. You are just another photographer. Another animator. Another singer/songwriter. Another anything you can think of. I don't mean to be pessimistic but think about how many people you are going against. Or even the sea of people you are drowned under. A solution to this? Your only shot is to explode out of the sea of people. A uniqueness that only you have. You need to make it where people stop and give you the time of day. I know some ways but can't share all my secrets lol
There are moments in my life (some longg moments) as an artist I feel like I don't want to sing/write/draw/animate or do anything anymore. Whether I achieve my goal, I noticed people stop watching me, or I want to rest for a time being. It is these moments my ambition drops and I can't keep going anymore. If you ever drop to this level, you need to get yourself out fast! I mean that when I say it. You can rest but whatever you do, don't succumb to sloth. It will really kill your success. Too many times I see others and I take these long pauses and just die from existence. It is a feeling that is hard to explain and it overtakes your entire career (sometimes you can't even out anymore because you're too comfortable). I can go on and on about how painful and regrettable this moment is but I want to give a solution.
Do you have or know anybody that has kids? Think about it like this. If your child was hungry. Would you feed him/her? If she smelled, would you bathe her? If he needed affection, would you give him that attention? Think deeply about this. You would do all you can to keep your child alive and happy and make sure he/she become successful. You need to look at art like it's alive and it's your baby. Good times will be there but there will also be struggles and hardships and wanting to give up. BUT that desperation needs to be there! You need to keep your child alive as you need to keep your art breathing. Change your view on your craft. This is the inner fight of an artist and the rise of one.
How you should determine pay.
Hourly vs Commission
Too many times I see this or get asked this. Realistically you should charge by commission. If you are working on a project and let's say they want outline and color without highlights or overbearing shading. Or you're doing a photo shoot and they want X amount of pictures with edits, or you are composing music with X amount of instruments. You as an artistshould be able to estimate/determine how long it's going to take, and the client should have an understanding how your piece will look like. (make sure to have a portfolio) It really doesn't make perfect sense to charge by hourly since the duration could be longer. Plus it also leaves assumption to the artist that he/she may not be working diligently. We are conditioned to work hourly because of how modern industry advocates us to do so. The only time and this is hard to pin point, in my view, you should work hourly when you are working on a huge project. Not days or weeks but months. Or if the client is always reviewing and working side by side with you. All together though just try to avoid hourly. It's a bag of headaches.
